College of Physicians and Surgeons
This program will send a team of 3 attending
physicians and one gynecologic resident or
pelvic surgery fellow to Niamey, Niger for 10
days, where they will treat women with vesico
vaginal fistulae and train local healthcare
providers to care for these patients. The trip
will be taken twice a year to enable more
patients the opportunity for surgical cure and
to allow a greater number of surgeons and
residents/fellows to have this invaluable
educational experience. The team will travel
in coordination with the International
Organization for Women and Development, which
has an established relationship with the
National Hospital in Niamey and is supported
by the government of Niger. This organization
has sent a group of surgeons for this purpose
to Niger every 2-3 months for the past year
and has established working protocols with the
local staff for patient care. Each team will
be led by Dr. Charles Ascher-Walsh, a member
of the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic
Reconstructive Surgery at Columbia University.
Additional attendings will be selected based
on experience, interest and availability. As
a great interest in the program has been
claimed by residents at Columbia University, a
lottery system will be created to facilitate
selection.
