Summer Internship at St. Luke's International Medical Center in Tokyo, Japan
College of Physicians and Surgeons

A summer internship for rising second-year medical students in Tokyo, at the St. Luke's International Medical Center. The goal of the overall program is to enrich the medical student experience with an international (Japanese) exposure (clinical, research, OPD, or Public Health) relevant to both medical cultures, in a friendly environment. A wide variety of experiences is available, depending on the interests of the student, and the availability of a particular mentor. This medical center is widely valued for its international flavor; English is widely spoken by MD staffs - other disciplines are Japanese- primarily. The richest interactions are with an excellent housestaff, for whom an American- connection is often attractive. The Mentors (more senior physicians) are excellent. A long-term relationship, mediated through the Episcopal Church in New York (a founding agent for the Hospital in 1902), has resulted in many training opportunities, usually FROM Japan TO the US, but the influences have been bi-directional. An active "American Council", with many P&S grads involved, has monitored, mentored, and guided these interactions.
