Metabolic Bone Diseases in China
College of Physicians and Surgeons

This project is a far-ranging international collaboration between the Metabolic Bone Diseases Unit at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and our counterparts in Beijing (PUMC), Shanghai (Second Medical Institute), and Hong Kong (Hong Kong University). On the basis of two trips and continuing discussions, it is planned to conduct bilateral and intranational studies related to osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. The Columbia group lead by Drs. Bilezikian and Siris will help to coordinate activities on this site. Although the means by which this work will be funded is not yet secured, it is hoped that it will be possible to initiate a far-ranging menu of both basic mechanisms of Paget's disease, osteoporosis, and hyperparathyroidism. The clinical studies will involve therapeutic trials of agents to prevent or treat osteoporosis as well as clinical descriptions that define basic differences in the phenotypic presentation of common metabolic bone diseases.
